Thermoplastic (TPE)

TPE, or Thermoplastic Elastomer, is a versatile class of materials that combines the elastic properties of rubber with the molding capability of plastics. Unlike traditional rubber, TPE can be melted and reshaped multiple times without losing its original characteristics. This makes it ideal for applications requiring flexibility and durability. TPEs are used in a wide range of products, from soft-touch grips and automotive parts to medical devices and consumer electronics. Their ability to stretch and return to their original shape, along with resistance to wear and environmental conditions, makes them a popular choice in today’s manufacturing.

Plastics Disclosure Statement

Plastic cutting boards are considered safe when used and maintained correctly. They are easy to clean and sanitize in the dishwasher which prevents bacterial growth. However, plastic cutting boards can release micro-sized particles during normal use. Studies are ongoing as it is not yet clear if micro-particles have any health-related impact.

According to research published by the American Chemical Society, in toxicity tests, micro-particles of polyethylene showed no substantial effect on mouse cell viability.2  Human health implications are still being studied.

POLYPROPYLENE AND POLYETHYLENE ARE FDA-APPROVED FOR FOOD CONTACT

Dexas uses FDA-approved raw materials, including 100% virgin polypropylene and polyethylene, which are certified safe for all food contact.  The company is aware of recent reports regarding microplastics in the environment and their presence in human testing and we continue to monitor these developments. Preliminary research studies have been done by the Center for Research on Ingredient Safety at Michigan State University, as well as a small-scale study funded by North Dakota State University and published by the American Chemical Society’s website.

This small-scale study, as reported by the ACS, concluded that wood boards were also likely to release micro-particles while in use. Researcher reported that these items (wood boards) sloughed off 4 to 22 times more microparticles that plastic ones in different tests
